The Tribe of Dumah |
|
Dumah, a son of Ishmael Ishmael was the first son of Abraham and Hagar, the Egyptian handmaid of Sarah, the wife of Abraham. Sarah (Sarai) could not bare Abraham (Abram) any children. Sarah told her husband to obtain children by her handmaid Hagar. Sarah and Abraham dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan. Sarah gave Hagar, her Egyptian maid, to her husband Abraham to be his wife. Hagar conceived and saw she was despised in the eyes of her mistress. Sarah told Abraham that her wrong would be upon him. She gave her maid to him and when she conceived Sarah was despised in her eyes. Sarah said the LORD judges between me and you. Abraham reminded Sarah her maid was in her hand to do as she pleases. Sarah dealt hardly with her. Hagar fled from her face. The angel of the LORD found Hagar by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. Hagar told the angel of the LORD she fled from the face of her mistress Sarah. The angel of the LORD told Hagar to return to her mistress, and submit herself under her hand. The angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. Hagar was told she would bear a son and shall call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. Hagar did as she was told by the angel of the LORD. Ishmael would be a wild man. His hand would be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. He shall dwell in the presence of all his brothers. (Genesis 16:1-12). The two sons of Abraham were Isaac whose mother was Sarah, and Ishmael whose mother was Hagar the handmaid to Sarah. These are their generations of Ishmael; the firstborn was Nebaioth; then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael. (1 Chronicles 1:28-31). Dumah is the sixth son of Ishmael. Dumah is connected with Edom and Seir in Isaiah 21:11. The prophecy concerning Dumah is in the form of a question: Watchman (Protector, guard) what of the night (03915. A twist (away of the light), figuratively, adversity). The morning comes and also the night, if they will enquire (to desire earnestly) and return then come. (Isaiah 21:11-13). He was called out of Seir. (Seir 08165 a mountain of Idumaea and its aboriginal occupants). Idumaea is in the country of Edom. Edom is where Esau, the brother of Jacob, settled. (Genesis 32:3). It is today in Jordan. Esau and Jacob were the sons of Rebekah and Isaac. Isaac was the son of Abraham and Sarah. Esau married the daughter of Ishmael, Bashemath, who was the last of his three wives. Bashemath bare Esau a son called Reuel. Four tribes of the Edomites came from Reuel. These are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife. (Genesis 36:3-4,13). The Lord GOD gave a vision to the prophet Obadiah concerning Edom. There have heard rumors from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen (01471. a foreign nation; hence, a Gentile), telling them to arise and let us rise up against her in battle. Edom has been made small among the heathen and greatly despised. Interesting to note: [“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised; Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart”.] (Jeremiah 9:25-26). The pride of their heart has deceived them. They that dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high that say in his heart; “Who shall bring me down to the ground”? Prophetic Word “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit”. (Isaiah 14:12-15). ] |
