The Word on the Mountain
(Lesson 5)

The Meek

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5 AV)

Jesus Christ is not a wimp, and he does not want his faithful followers to be wimps either. Those who oppose him have taken great advantage of the word “meek” in these times, and wickedly suggested that Jesus Christ and his followers have self imposed, inferior and often effeminate natures. As the wicked created and nurtured this illusion of weakness, many young Christians began assuming this nature, wrongly believing that their meekness to the world defined them as Christians and was a witness to their salvation and righteousness.

Meekness is not a sign of holiness, an indication of faithfulness, a badge of position or an attitude readjustment. It is not an act of humbleness in front of the people of the world, nor is it a statement of worth when compared to them.

Meekness comes from truly fearing the LORD GOD. The meek nature is a believer’s realization of weakness and insignificance when compared to the Power and Glory of the LORD GOD.

It is not meekness among men that Jesus spoke of in his sermon on the mount. It was the true condition of awe and fear toward the LORD GOD, and the true response of meekness that it brings. It is the meek who truly understand and rely on the greatness of the LORD GOD who will one day be given inheritance of the earth.

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5 AV)
190. Those who are mild and humble will inherit the earth. This inheritance will make them extremely happy.
“What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth. The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.” (Psalms 25:12-14 AV)
191. A person that inherits the earth, fears the LORD GOD. True fear of the LORD GOD brings a believer to humbleness, with a realization of weakness and insignificance next to the Almighty.

192. The LORD GOD will teach those who are humbled by his Power and Glory the Things that He chooses.

193. The soul of the humbled believer will be filled with good things.

194. The secret of the LORD GOD is given to those who fear him. They will be allowed an intimate, close relationship with Him, and receive His counsel.

195. The LORD GOD will give the humbled believers knowledge of His relationship to them.
“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” (Psalms 37:7-11 AV)
196. Those who wait upon the LORD GOD will inherit the earth. Those who inherit the earth are the Meek. Because of this knowledge given to us by Christ in his Sermon on the Mount, we can delve deeper into Scripture and find true characteristics of the Meek.

197. To wait upon the LORD GOD means that the meek believers rest in the LORD GOD and wait patiently for him.

198. The Meek do not get angry or jealous about the wicked which prosper from their devious plans. The evil doers will be destroyed, and the meek who wait upon the LORD GOD will inherit the earth in His Time.

199. The Meek should not do evil, regardless of the wicked actions brought against them. If evil is done, then the evildoer will be destroyed. The Meek must be patient and wait on the LORD GOD and His Time and Way.

200. The Meek will consider the place of the wicked, and understand their coming destruction with great discernment.

201. The Meek will have an abundance of peace and be very happy.
“The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.” (Psalms 37:21-22 AV)
202. The wicked borrow but do not repay.

203. The righteous stoop in kindness to one who is inferior and gives.

204. The wicked will be cursed and destroyed.

205. The righteous will inherit the earth. Another characteristic of the Meek who inherit the earth is their righteousness.
“And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)”

“And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out. And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed.”

“And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous. And Aaron said unto Moses, Alas, my lord, I beseech thee, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned. Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother’s womb. And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee. And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again. And Miriam was shut out from the camp seven days: and the people journeyed not till Miriam was brought in again. And afterward the people removed from Hazeroth, and pitched in the wilderness of Paran.” (Numbers 12:1-16 AV)
206. Moses was very meek. His meekness was above all the men that lived on the face of the earth.

207. Miriam (sister) and Aaron (brother) spoke against Moses because he had married an Ethiopian woman. They chided each other that they too were prophets of the LORD GOD whom He spoke through, and that Moses was really not that special.

208. The LORD GOD overheard the arrogant and jealous conversation between Miriam and Aaron which spoke against Moses. He called Moses, Aaron and Miriam to the Tabernacle of the Congregation. Aaron and Miriam were called to the door of the Tabernacle by the LORD GOD and He declared that it was He that chose the prophet, not them.

209. The LORD GOD made a point that Moses was unlike Aaron and Miriam because he was meek and faithful. As a result of his favor toward Moses and his meekness he promised to...

1. Make Himself known to him in a vision
2. Speak to him in a dream
3. Speak mouth to mouth apparently, and not in dark speeches
4. The similitude of the LORD GOD shall he behold

210. The LORD GOD became very angry against Aaron and Miriam for speaking against Moses. He departed from off the Tabernacle and Miriam became leprous.

211. The scourge of leprosy came as a result of the LORD GOD laying sin upon the sinner. When Miriam was punished with the leprosy by the LORD GOD, it was a symbolic spit in her face, to cause her to be ashamed for her sin.

212. Aaron, no longer believing he had the same authority as Moses, went to Moses and asked him to speak to the LORD GOD. When Moses cried to the LORD GOD for her healing, the LORD GOD agreed after Miriam had been separated seven days from her people.
“The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.” (Psalms 22:26 AV)
213. The meek shall eat and be satisfied. They will devour and consume at a higher, more difficult, more intense level of understanding the Things of God, and they will be filled.

214. The meek will praise the LORD GOD when they seek him

215. The heart of the meek shall live forever
“Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.” (Psalms 25:8-10 AV)
216. The LORD GOD will teach sinners who are on the path in His Way.

217. The LORD GOD will guide the meek in judgment.

The sinners in the LORD GOD’s way are taught by Him. How much more are the meek taught, when they are guided in judgment and taught His Way! There most certainly is a great difference between being taught His Things when you are in His Way, versus being guided by Him in His Judgment and taught about His Way.

It is the meek who gain the LORD GOD’s attention and specific, directed teachings to learn His Way.

218. There is more than one path to the LORD GOD for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. All paths to Him are filled with His mercy and truth.

It is important to note the requirement of keeping the LORD GOD’s covenant and testimonies while on the path toward Him. This verse is sometimes used to defend the mistaken belief that a path to the LORD GOD exists which allows a walk toward him that deviates from His Word. The key words are “keeping his covenant and his testimonies”. Paths that fail to uphold these Things of the LORD GOD are not paths to Him, but rather paths to eventual judgment and damnation.

“Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry? Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still, When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.” (Psalms 76:7-9 AV)
219. The LORD GOD must be feared. No one can stand in his sight when He is angry.

220. His powerful and fearful judgment is heard in Heaven and earth, and causes the earth to fear and be still.

221. The LORD GOD saves the meek of the earth by bringing His judgment in His time.
“The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground.” (Psalms 147:6 AV)
222. The LORD GOD restores the meek and makes them able to stand upright.

223. The LORD GOD causes the wicked to be brought low to the ground.
“Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp. For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.”

“Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand; To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.” (Psalms 149:1-9 AV)
224. The LORD GOD will make the meek beautiful with His salvation, and this will please Him greatly.

225. The meek will praise the LORD GOD and sing a new song to him. They will congregate together with other meek and holy believers, and rejoice together in praise of the LORD GOD’s undeserved but richly received salvation.

226. The meek will one day speak the high things of the LORD GOD.

227. The meek will one day be honored to weld the two edged sword in their hand and use it to...

1) Execute vengeance upon the heathen and punishments upon the people
2) Bind kings to chains and nobles with fetters of iron
3) To execute upon them the judgment written

NOTE: Psalm 149 is a song of times to come for the LORD GOD’s people. We know this prophetic passage is speaking of the establishment of the Kingdom of God after these End Times and the Day of Judgment in several ways...

1) Psalm 149 is unique for its relation to praise occurring within the Kingdom of the LORD GOD. Although it begins with the normal call to praise, the cause of praise is the coming establishment of the new kingdom on earth.

2) Israel and the children of Zion will not rejoice for the King Jesus Christ until their blindness is lifted in the last days. 3) We also know through our study to this point that the LORD GOD requires patience from the meek, as time is prepared and unfolds according to His Will for the glorification of the righteous and the destruction of the wicked.

4) The two-edged sword is used to execute the Judgment of the LORD GOD, and the meek Saints are honored to receive that task.

“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.” (Isaiah 11:1-5 AV)
228. Jesus Christ was given the Spirit of Fear of the LORD GOD. (For further understanding of the Spirit of Fear of the LORD GOD, refer to Lesson 5 in our Beginnings of All Things Created study).

229. Jesus Christ was meek because he was given the Spirit of Fear of the LORD GOD and had great understanding His Power.

230. Jesus Christ had a deep understanding in the fear of the LORD GOD, and was able to judge with righteousness and equity, rather than with just his eyes and ears, as a result.

231. The Spirit of Fear of the LORD GOD, in His time, moves Jesus Christ to...

1) Judge the poor in spirit with righteousness
2) Justify and correct the meek equally in a straight and upright way
3) Smite the earth with the rod of his mouth ( Punish with the spoken rod of His Judgment)
4) Slay the wicked with the breath of his lips
“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.” (Isaiah 61:1-3 AV)
232. Jesus Christ declared that he was the One to whom the Spirit of the LORD GOD sent for the His works expressed in Isaiah 61:1-3, when he read this scripture in the synagogue on Sabbath in Nazareth. (Luke 4:18-19)

233. Jesus Christ was anointed by the Spirit of the LORD GOD to...

1) Preach good tidings (the new Gospel) to the meek
2) Bind the brokenhearted
3) Proclaim liberty to the captives and opening the prison to those who are bound
4) Proclaim the acceptable year and the day of vengeance of the LORD GOD
5) To comfort all mourners
6) To appoint mourners in Zion
7) Give beauty to ashes, oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness

234. The results of Jesus Christ’s anointed works will grow his followers into trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD GOD, which will glorify Him.
“Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired; Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you. Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.” (Zephaniah 2:1-3 AV)
235. The meek of the earth must seek the LORD GOD, which brings them to seek righteousness. It is righteousness that will hide them in the day of the LORD GOD’s anger.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 AV)
236. Jesus Christ declares himself meek and lowly in heart to encourage his followers that labor and burdened to lean on him.

It is not the power of Jesus Christ that relieves a believer of the tremendous burdens of natural life. It is the meekness of Jesus Christ that allows the powers of the LORD GOD to effect restoration and relief!

237. Jesus Christ encourages his followers to learn of him to receive rest to their souls.

To take the yoke of Jesus Christ means to learn of him and his way, a task that is easy.

238. The burden of Jesus Christ is light. Through his meekness, the LORD GOD’s power lifts his burden from his shoulders.

Jesus Christ reassures his followers that leaning on him will not cause him burden, because his burdens are held up through the power of the LORD GOD.

“And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.” (Matthew 21:1-11 AV)
239. Jesus Christ rode meekly into Jerusalem, sitting upon an ass. The meekness of Jesus Christ allowed the full authority of the LORD GOD to shine forth, and the multitudes standing along the way recognized Jesus Christ as King, who came in the name of the LORD GOD.

Review: The Seven Steps of True Meekness

1. Fear of the LORD GOD
2. Experience the true condition of meekness as a result of your awe for Him
3. Receive nature of peace and seek righteousness given by the LORD GOD to the meek, with the ability to discern wickedness and relate to holiness
4. Wait patiently for the LORD GOD’s Will and Ways to be accomplished in His Time
5. Lean on the meekness of Jesus Christ, to receive rest for your soul
6. Expect to be honored one day to execute the Judgment of Jesus Christ against the wicked in His Time
7. Receive the inheritance of the New Earth as a result of your meekness coming from the fear of the LORD GOD

If you truly fear the LORD GOD, then you are meek. If you are meek, then you will inherit the earth as Jesus Christ promised in his sermon on the mount.

You are not made meek as a performance to mankind. You are not made meek to show a side of righteousness that is seldom observed in the world. You are not made meek to be like Jesus Christ, and maybe one day to become a god yourself.

You are meek because you know the power of the LORD GOD, and relinquish your minute power to His greatness. As a result of this relinquishment of self, you meekly place your trust in Him, and rely on His great powers to be used in His Way, with His Will in His Time.

Patience of the meek will one day bring the inheritance of the earth to them. What a great day that will be, when the New Earth is given to those who fear the power of the LORD GOD, and who stand in awe of His great Ways!
