The Word on the Mountain
(Lesson 4)

The Mourners

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Matt 5:4 AV)

The focus is on the loss of the One you love most...the one whom your life is centered and the One whom you live for...the One whom you would die for if necessary...and the One whom did die for you because He loved you so very much.

It’s about the intimate and loving relationship between Jesus Christ and you, and the need for you to see, hear, touch, smell, talk, laugh and walk with the One you love so dearly. It’s about loving so deeply and so intensely, that the thought of being able to live without the One you love in your presence is unthinkable.

It’s about the love you have with your wife, mother, father, children, siblings, friends and mentors, all rolled up together in this visceral ball of emotional, physical and spiritual expression of devotion for Him, and the absolute and devastating void that would be left if He was no longer with you.

It’s about the sobs of a soul, the tearing of clothes from the body, the beating of your chest in expression of your pain. It’s about the agony of loss of even yourself, as the reality that the One you love so deeply is no longer before you. It’s about having no strength to eat, stand, walk, sleep or even to breathe, as the raw emotions of sorrow bend your body to the point of breaking.

The focus is on the loss of the presence of Him, and the physical and spiritual mourning for that separation for even the shortest of time. It’s about the loss of the one you love most, and mourning so deeply, that your need to survive comes to an end.

“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4 AV)
139. Jesus Christ said that those who mourn will be blessed, because they will one day be comforted. This comfort will “call near” the mourner, and refresh the spirit.
“Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.” (Luke 6:21 AV)
140. Those who cry aloud for the loss of the presence of the One they love will one day laugh with joy.
“Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.” (Luke 6:25 AV)
141. Those who are laughing right now will one day grieve and sob.
“Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.” (Matthew 9:14-15 AV)
142. Fasting, the practice of abstaining as a religious exercise from food and drink was the tradition of the disciples of John the Baptist and also of the Pharisees.

143. The disciples of John the Baptist asked Jesus Christ why his disciples did not fast. He explained that his disciples would not mourn while he was with them. It was only when the presence of the One they loved was no longer with them would they would mourn and fast.

The immense joy the disciples felt in the presence of the One they loved prevented the solemn religious tradition of fasting. The religious tradition of fasting differs from the fast of a mournful soul. One reflects the practices of religion, while the other is the loss of desire for survival of life because of the deepest grief for the loss of presence of the One we love.

“Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.” (Mark 16:9-13 AV)
144. Those that loved Jesus Christ and had been with him in life were in deep mourning and weeping upon his death. When Mary Magdalene reported that He had resurrected from death into life, their sorrow was so deep, that they were unable to believe.
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” (James 4:8-10 AV)
145. To approach God, and for Him to draw close to you requires a purification of your hearts and your hands...the things you are, and the things you do. If the things you are differ from the things you do, then the condition of double mindedness exists.

146. Double mindedness separates you from approaching the One you love, and prevents Him from coming close to you. That separation from the One you love should make you feel miserable, and cause you to mourn and weep.

147. The effort you make to realize that your separation from the One you love is directly related to your double mindedness, to change your worldly laughter to spiritual mourning, and your carnal joy to a spiritual nature of heaviness, makes you humble before the Lord.

148. The humble Faithful are lifted up and able to approach and be close to the Lord once again.

A fine-lined point, but critical to mention...We do not mourn to gain our loved one’s attention. We mourn because we have lost our loved one’s presence. It’s not a matter of subtle manipulation with our outward and inward emotional release, but rather a true evaluation of our guilt in causing the separation in the first place. This honest appraisal creates the true humbleness of being, and brings a true relationship with our loved one back together.

“If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.” (Philippians 2:1-2 AV)
149. If you have drawn near to Christ, and are comforted in love through the fellowship of the Spirit, then you are filled with joy.

150. Fellowship with other believers who are also comforted by he Holy Spirit are like minded. As a result, they are of one accord and one mind.
“And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;” (Zechariah 12:9-12 AV)
151. One day, the LORD GOD will pour the Spirit of Grace and the Spirit of Supplication upon the Jews of Israel, the House of David, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. At that moment, they will recognize Jesus Christ as the one they pierced, and they will mourn greatly.
“And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more: The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men. And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all. The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.” (Revelation 18:9-24 AV)
152. The people of the world, with their carnal natures, will mourn one day for the loss and separation of their great riches they hold most dear to themselves. These are not the people who will be blessed with comfort that Jesus Christ spoke of in his sermon on the mountain.
“Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (Matthew 24:29-31 AV)
153. The tribes of the earth will mourn immediately after the tribulation, when they see Jesus Christ coming in the clouds of Heaven with power and great glory. These are not the people who will be blessed with comfort that Jesus Christ spoke of in his sermon on the mountain.
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”

“If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” (John 14:12-21 AV)
154. Jesus Christ will do great works from the Kingdom of Heaven because he is with His Father. Because of this, he is separated from his followers for a time.

155. Regardless of the separation, Jesus Christ will do any thing asked in his name, so his Father may be glorified through him.

156. If you love Jesus Christ, and keep his commandment, then he will pray to his Father to give you another Comforter. (The first Comforter was Jesus Christ). These are the blessed ones who are promised comfort in Jesus Christ’s sermon on the mountain.

157. The Comforter will abide with you for ever

158. The Comforter is the Spirit of Truth. The Spirit of Truth is also known as the Holy Ghost. (See our Lesson 9 in “The Beginnings of All Things Created” book in the Spirit of Truth section)

159. The Comforter can neither be seen nor understood by the world.

160. The Spirit of Truth is known by those who love Jesus Christ, because the Holy Ghost dwells with and within them.

161. Jesus Christ will not leave those he loves without comfort. He understands the deep mourning caused by his separation from them, and with his greatest of loves, ensures that they are comforted in his absence.

162. The world is unable to see Jesus Christ, but those who love him can see him through the Comforter.

163. Because Jesus Christ lives, so too can the lovers of Christ live.

164. Jesus Christ is in his Father.

165. Those who love Jesus Christ are within him.

166. Jesus Christ is within those who love him.

167. To have Jesus Christ’s commandments and keep them is proof to him of your love for him.

168. Those who love Jesus Christ, receive the LORD GOD’s love.

169. Those who the LORD GOD loves is loved by Jesus Christ.

170. Because Jesus Christ loves his Faithful, he promises to show himself to them and make his presence known.

The circle of love...Jesus Christ loves us, we love him, the LORD GOD loves us because we love His son, and Jesus loves us back for pleasing His Father. How precious the love is as it travels around the circle, passed from one to another, in the Spirit of Truth!

“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.” (John 15:26-27 AV)
171. The Comforter is sent by Jesus Christ to the Faithful.

172. The Comforter comes from the LORD GOD.

173. The Comforter has even the Spirit of Truth.

174. The Spirit of Truth comes from the Father LORD GOD, and testifies of Jesus Christ.

175. The Faithful also bear witness to Jesus Christ because they have been with him from the beginning.
“These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you. But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.”

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”

“A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.”

“And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.”

“I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:1-33 AV)
176. The Comforter will not come to the Faithful while Jesus Christ is physically present in their lives. The Comforter is provided so both the Faithful and Jesus Christ can bear the separation from each other, and is sent by him to them in love.

177. When the Comforter comes, he will...1) Rebuke the world of sin because they do not believe in Jesus Christ, 2) Rebuke the world of righteousness because Jesus Christ went to his Father, and the Faithful could no longer see him, 3) Rebuke the world of judgment, because the prince of this world, is judged.

178. Jesus Christ has many things to say to the Faithful, but his message cannot be received completely at one time. The Spirit of Truth will guide the Faithful into all truth.

179. The Comforter will not speak of himself, but only speak the things that he hears from Jesus Christ.

180. The Comforter will show you things to come.

181. The Comforter will glorify Jesus Christ by receiving his things, and showing them to the Faithful.

182. All things of the Father LORD GOD are also the things of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ has asked the Comforter to show these things of Them to the Faithful.

183. Jesus Christ was separated from his Disciples for a little while, and they could not see him because he went to Him. A little while later, they saw him again through the presence of the Holy Ghost Comforter, as he was sent by Jesus to them as he had promised.

184. The Faithful weep and lament at the time of separation from Jesus Christ. The world rejoices when he is not present. When the Comforter comes, the sorrow will be turned into joy and the heart of the Faithful will rejoice. No man can take the joy given by the Comforter away from the Faithful.

185. When the Comforter comes, whatsoever the Faithful ask the Father LORD GOD in Jesus Christ’s name will be given to them, so their joy will be full.

186. When the Faithful pray in Christ’s name (after the Father LORD GOD is known plainly), Jesus will pray for their needs also. The Father LORD GOD loves the Faithful, because they love Jesus, and believe that he came out from the LORD GOD.

187. Jesus Christ came forth from the Father, and came into the world: again, he left the world, and went to the Father.

188. Jesus Christ is not alone because His Father is with Him.

189. In spite of tribulations to come, Jesus Christ comforts the Faithful to be of good cheer and have peace, because he has overcome the world.

It’s not about the common mourners of the world, who cry at the loss of their things, relationships, honor and wail at the graves of their loved ones.

It’s not about the religious traditions of fasting and prayer in sorrow for the world’s shortcomings.

It’s about the one real and deep love that is intimately shared between a follower and Christ in truth, and the sorrow that is felt when they are separated. It is about the deep love that Christ has for his followers, to send them a Comforter to connect them with him and his Father, and soothe the pain of their separation.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Jesus knows. He knows those that love Him. He knows the depth of the sorrow that the loss of his presence brings to those who cherish Him completely. In love returned, He sends the Comforter to sustain the faithful until they can once again be reunited with his presence completely and forever be with the One they love!

Come, Lord Jesus, quickly!
