North Korea

North Korea launches short-range missiles in test - 03/09/3006

In a standoff over its nuclear program, North Korea test-fired two short-range missiles, reminding nations of their professed nuclear weapons program.

Conflicting reports of the direction the missiles were fired have been received by Japan. A source in China reported the missiles were fired by mistake in the direction of China and apparently landed in North Korean territory. A Western military source reported the missiles were test-fired from North Korea's eastern coast toward the Sea of Japan. At least one missile landed in the sea about 60 miles northeast of the launch site.

North Korea announced a moratorium on missile tests, but has since test-fired short-range missiles many times, including one launched into the Sea of Japan in May.
